The feast of Santa Margherita
The feast of Santa Margherita These are s. Margherita, originally from Antioch, martyred towards the mid -century III, during the persecution of Diocletian. Her party falls on July 20, but the solemn celebration is transported to the following Sunday, this year she had a particularly festive success for the accurate preparation of the choir and for the presence of the dean of the village.
Here is the judgment of one of the many present at the party.
«Our ancestors were certainly less sophisticated, sure they would say more rough than us. However, they had a strong, innate sense of the beauty of nature and the landscape and knew how to find and choose the best and most suggestive places to build churches or chapels, in order to honor God, express their devotion to the Madonna or some saint and testify in such way their simple but profound faith.
The picturesque church of s. Margherita is a very pertinent and illuminating example of this balanced interpenetration of religiosity and appreciation of beauty. Built before 1270 on a green declined of the Civerone, according to the dictates of the traditional building of the Church Valsuganese - roof with steep pitched - preserves intact - thanks to the restoration works carried out a few years ago - the harmonious and slender Renaissance Protyrus and Unfortunately, but still wonderfully alive the sixteenth -century frescoes by Lorenzo Naurizio. A wonderful vision of the valley and the mountains that surround it is offered to those who look out the wall that delimits the esplanade on which the church stands. At the foot of him, Castelnovo arose before the Vicenza destroyed him, forcing the survivors to reconstruct their country on the left bank of the Brenta. The inhabitants of Castelnovo were always very fond of the church, which was once entrusted to the custody of a hermit.
Also this year they got into large numbers on Sunday 23 July, to celebrate the feast of the Saint. To those who participated in the Mass and seem to see that a new spirit animated them. New spirit translated into an attitude of serious participation in the rite and reflected in an atmosphere of anxiety of renewal anchored to the traditions of their fathers. An attitude that perfectly corresponds to what the dean of the village exposed in its homily about the moment that crosses the church between the trends of those who want it progressive to the bitter end and those who want it firm and immobile, forgetting that the old and the new They are only temporary and transeunti phases of the tiring and prochalous navigation of the Navicella di Pietro. In fact, it focuses towards banks that are not of this world. Those who are not ready to follow this route runs the terrible risk of losing the right way and finding themselves alone, if not even of shipwreck››.

La sagra di S. Margherita del 1923
From a newspaper cutout of the time, we report the description of the 1923 S. Margherita Festival.
The church of S. Margherita, the careful careful vatusa located on a hill to the right of the Brenta, was always kept in great veneration by the devoted people who rushed to you confident on the occasion of public calamities and every year on the Sunday following at the Old Festival Owner went up en masse to prostrate reverent in front of the Saint's simulacrum and ask for protection and comfort. But the war had left you terrible traces of its passage.
The furniture was destroyed or removed, the altar, demolished the roof largely, had only the naked walls. The statue of the Saint, however, was preserved from ruin: unknown soldiers - God bless them! - They had transported it to the presbytery of the archpriest of the village, whence it was then reported in the village by repatriate refugees.
Despite the compassionate state of the church, this good people did not want to give up the traditional party for any pact, and every year, the chopped altar and covered the ceiling with copper of the nearby forest, the dear simulacrum on the shoulders of four was transported to the least worst and covered Sturdy young people alternating with four others and all the people took processionally up there. The statue was better placed on the rubble of the altar and the functions took place in Santa Letizia covered discovered which browse Bertoldo's guise. In the evening then the devoted procession brought the statue back to the village.
The successive restoration works had led to the coverage of the church and the remittance of the ceiling in crude oil, but for about three years each work was suspended for the usual bureaucratic ironing of the liquidator.
then the strength to cut short to many delays was found in the country and to take on the head of their heads, further works limited to the internal decorum of the Church, with naturally reserve of recasting the expenses by those in duty. Faith of people, tenacity of will, Concordia of spirits fruits what three months ago would not have dreamed: the altar remitted and adorned with artistic niche, redone the floor, prepared the desks, ceiling and floors pulled to the last hand .
And yesterday this believing people transported the statue of the patron saint to place it definitively, after the ritual reconciliation of the church desecrated during the war, in a devotion and ordered procession. To make the dear function more solemn and memoranda, the good social gang of darkness who died of uncommon Valentia contributed worthily. There was also transported and put the venerated simulacrum of the old Madonnina back to its niche, which had also been equipped with the vandalism of the war fury, and that in the first year of war the mothers and distressed brides had covered with precious votive habits to imitate safety to their loved ones called under the weapons. It was a general emotion, made more sensitive by the touching harmonies of musical instruments. The old people, not being able to follow the procession for the Erta del Colle, accompanied him with the soft eye of crying and gave one last heartfelt greeting to the dear Madonnina, to the sweet patron. It was an unforgettable day, enhanced by numerous rushing to the holy sacraments and not at all troubled by those unfortunate accidents that do not rarely fatal the village festivals. Honest praise to those who contributed to the success of the party, in particular to Mr. Luigi Denicolò, Zealante Fabbriciere, who was the soul of everything referred to the mentioned restoration works and the organization of the party; as well as to Mrs. Teresina Longo Ved. From the chestnut who knew with masterful touches of brush and intelligent gilding give valuable emphasis to the artistic altar, the work of the modest and good carver mr. Marches of Strigno.

The Shara of S. Margherita in Castelnovo
I transcribe from "Il Nuovo Trentino" on Wednesday 29 July 1925 the following correspondence from Casteinovo.
27 July - The church of Santa Margherita, the careful careful vetusta on a hill to the right of the Brenta, great veneration was always held by the devoted people who rushed to you confident on the occasion of public calamities and every year on the Sunday following the head of the ancient owner went up en masse to prostrate reverent in front of the simulacrum of the saint, and ask for protection and comfort. Still on the feast of s. Margherita
Many "castarovati" not too young certainly remember how the feast of Santa Margherita took place until about twenty years ago. The eve was dedicated to the "Campanò", to the preparation of some banquet and, in exceptional cases, of the carousel in the square, and to the fires that were lit on the flounces of the "Sasso dell'Orco".
In the morning following the procession that went up to the church of the patron saint, the population of the country participated compactly, so much so that many people could not find a place in the church and had to remain outside of it. Someone - a few in truth - sometimes took this to pretext not to resist the temptation to climb the house of the "margarites" to taste a glass of their famous "bianchetto" and perhaps to begin, with little good taste, a game of " blue raspberry". But the vast majority followed the functions careful and devoted, with the choir that was done more than honor with the "special mass" that had been preparing for a long time and with a "father" who pronounced a homily centered on life and on the Death of Santa Margherita. They were sericians who felt the fashion of the time and certainly not a few gave the impression of being a little too emphatic and rhetorical. Now many things have changed and it is difficult to say if this happened for the best. There is Certainly less participation and instead of the suggestive procession a carousel of machines runs through the road to the "Pallanella" and transforms the small plateau that surrounds the artistic church in the parking lot. There is no doubt, however, that the mass is followed with more spontaneity and devotion. And that the auditorium becomes very careful when the dean of Borgo, as has been doing for some years now, takes its cue from the affair of Santa Margherita to talk to us about some of the great religious and moral problems of our time. Problems that invest not only the faith and life of each of us, but that can have important reflections on the future of the Church and the world. This year the theme was centered on the so -called "dissent movement ››. The groups that are inspired by are generally motivated by the will of justice and love for others, but it does not seem to be doubtful that the principles that end up embracing are dangerous. Their insistence to give precedence to the solution of current problems in a purely social key ends up considering man as the center of the universe, denying the pre -eminence of God whose existence often comes to doubt. Thus disappears the first and most important of the commandments, the religion becomes a handmaid of politics and sociology and the Christian is induced to doubt his otherworldly destiny.
and fatal that from these premises is moved on to questioning, not to completely deny, the validity of the magisterium of the Church or its hierarchy born with the apostles. The conclusion of all this is therefore that, although not forgetting to act towards our brothers with a spirit of charity and understanding, it is also necessary to strengthen our attention and prudence. In fact, these are ferments that can be very dangerous for those who believe in Christ and in the Church that he has founded, to which he has entrusted our transening earthly lives.

Restoration in the church of S. Margherita
Perhaps more than one has asked the meaning of the Latin text shown on the plaque placed on the left wall of the church of S. Margherita. The sense of inscription can be made in Italian: «This temple dedicated to S. Margherita Virgin and Martyr is the first distinguished monument of the people of the lower Valsugana convinced to the religion of Christ by S. Prosdocimo bishop of Padua and disciple of the apostle Peter. For a long time, almost falling, the restoration of the GiovanniBattista Dorigatti da Tesino with the offers of Casteinovo in the year 1845, completed its restoration to the greatest glory of God and for example the future generations in the year 1856, curated the restoration.
There is no doubt that the Casteinovati have maintained faith to the example of the ancestors, both in respect of the sacred place and in the devotion to the martyr, if Don Malfatti - in his diary - thus had to write on 25 July 1920: "The church of S. Margherita is without the vault, without door and without benches, the cusp of the bell tower has folded up on itself. However, the population expressed the desire to solemnize the patronal feast (20 July) which is transported to the following Sunday to the holiday. And today he was satisfied with the pious desire. The Presidency of the Labor Cooperative took over the work. The altar was raised and placed the sacred stone previously (24 corr.) Consecrated by the undersigned by delegation (see acts arch.).
To shade the uncovered church, axes and beams were arranged from one side to the other and branches (Dase) were placed there and, above the presbytery, drapes. A fercolo was improvised, and eight robust young people committed themselves to bringing the statue of the S. Patrona up there. The access route was also raised for the occasion by the aforementioned cooperative. Thus it was possible to organize a devote procession and perform the usual anti and afternoon function. The people participated with praiseworthy and consoling frequency.
The nearby refreshment was sold to L. 4 the liter and the beer at the same price. The president of the cooperative is Luigi Demonte was Girolamo. The young bearers: Lira Giuseppe and Vittorio Di Roberto, Coradello Serafino was Baldassare, Bombasaro Emanuele Di Luigi, Debortoli Luigi was Valentino, Androllo Ottorino Di Francesco, Venzo Angelo Di Giuseppe and Brendolise Agostino was Leonardo ».
And after this short "step back" we communicate that the project of the restoration works of the church is exposed in the chapel of S. Leonardo. The offers collected so far amount to 7,546,000 lire. Currently we are unable to say when the work will begin, but we hope to be more saurient in the next numbers of this bulletin.

Our days
work in S. Margherita. During the feast of S. Margherita not a few faithful realized the precarious state of the church and wondered when they had started the announced works. Well, the recovery of the masonry should begin during the month of September. Assignee of the contract was the Molenta di Meano company. It will have to hand the renovation of the roof and the plasters, to the consolidation of the foundations and the walls, which will be prolonged up to delimiting the whole area of ??relevance of the church. The Province, the Municipality and the Parish contribute to the expenditure. As far as we are concerned, as a Christian community, the subscription for the coverage of the non -slight financial burden remains open.

Resumption of restoration works in the church of S. Margherita
For a few days the Motta company has taken up the work of our church of S. Margherita. We have reason to believe that everything will be completed for the party that this year will have a particular character, also due to the presence of our archbishop who at that time will find himself spending his holidays in the saddle. We are pleased to know that the Alpine Group already in its latest meeting took into consideration the conduct of the party itself. The promoter of the restoration will also meet as soon as possible. For everyone, it will be about to prepare us in the best way for this appointment. We would like to entrust our S. Patrona, together with S. Leonardo and above all to the Madonna Addolorata the spiritual and civil fate of all our community. We think that this will have to face in two senses: first through a religious renewal with the relative effort to trace the origins of our faith handed down to us by our fathers. And more precious inheritance that we should all convey together with future generations. We would also like to involve families in our history recently to live in our country, even if they are not fasting in the knowledge of our traditions, which the parish priest also goes +discovering through reading the documents. In the documents taken up in the "Memoirs of Castelnovo", by prof. Don Antonio Brusamolin and from Parish priest Don Gio-Battista Malfatti, it appears that the church was restored with the offers and performances of the people. And here is the second sense with which we should prepare for the next party. After the first momentum of enthusiasm of offers, a certain relaxation followed, also due, I think, of the suspension of the works. It is about taking it back. And there is no doubt that everyone will do their best. Here is what Don G.B. writes Malfatti: the church of Castelnovo, before the chapel of S. Leonardo was erected in the parish, he was the current one of S. Margherita that a tradition says be among the oldest in the valley. Nothing is documented about its origin but, if the erection of the chapel of S. Leonardo towards the century is placed. XIV, it can be legitimately stated that the church of S. Margherita must having been erected at least in the century. XIII. When the title of Curazia passed from the church of S. Margherita to that of S. Leonardo (beginning of the 16th century, as appears from a document of 1536) S. Margherita while continuing to remain Open to the worship, he ceased to be a place of public officiture and instead became a nice his hermitage. The story recalls several names of hermits who passed their lives in the shadow of the church and who after death were buried in the tomb, already for the past public cemetery for the faithful of Castelnovo. In 1589 the niche was painted, the statue of S. Margherita by the painter Lorenzo Mauricio, who perhaps also painted the images of the apostles in the ancient apse that was demolished in 1845 in the cause of the restorative restorations for a magnification of the church was painted. In 1782 a decree issued by Joseph II declared all the hermitages suppressed and therefore also in S. Margherita, considered such, it was closed and closed remained to cult until 1803 when for the instances of the people it was obtained that it was reopened to the public. In 1845 the church of S. Margherita was restored with the offers and performances of the people and expanded to the apse, being parish priest Don G.B. Dorigatti from Castel Tesino. In this circumstance a plaque was walled in the left wall) which says like this:
Hoc Templum - Sanctae Margaritae Virgini et Martyri dicatum - Primum Insigne Monumentum Populi Inherioris Ausuganeae - To Xsti Religionem for S. ProsDocimum - Episcopum patavinum ac apostles petri discipulum - Conversi - Lam Diu Fere Ruens year MDCCCXLV Elemosinis Fidelium - Castrinovi Restaurandum Et Year Mdccclvi ad Maiorem of the Gloriam - Et posteritatis exemplum perficiendum - Parochus Ioannes Baptista Dorigati Thesinensis - Curavit.
During the First World War, the Church was severely affected (as well as the parish church of S. Leonardo was also damaged) and only in the immediacy post -war period it was possible to hang it off.

Patronal feast of S. Margherita inaugurated the restoration works of the church on the slopes of Monte Zivaron (Civeron)
Sunday 21 July was celebrated the feast of the patron saint in his historic church recently restored by a special local committee with the generous competition of the population and with the decisive contribution of the Autonomous Province of Trento. The statue of the Saint, hosted for over a year in the parish church, was brought to his shoulders by a group of Alpini in the devoted procession that started at 9 and led by the archpriest dean of the village who had Father Beppino Venzo, missionary of the P.I.M.E. and our fellow citizen.
The procession is truly suggestive along the hairpin bends of the road «Palanella ››: a large crowd of women, men, teenagers, children, many young on the shoulders of dads or in the arms of mothers, collected and composed invoked with Litanies and other songs devoted celestial protection. During the s. Mass Don Giorgio Hueller recalled the story of S. Margherita, he incited the serious commitment of faith from her and gave a summary report of the works carried out to make the historic church functional to the cult. Everyone noted that further completion works are needed where it is thought that traces of ancient frescoes can be existed. Our choir has skilled the songs with skilled liturgicals of the party and then cheered the generous refreshment that our Alpini group offered to all the participants, among which various countrymen agreed were also agreed also from afar. The provincial authorities had sent the mayor of adhesion to the mayor, apologizing for the impossibility of attending in person. This year the feast of S. Margherita will be celebrated in the parish, due to the restoration works in progress in the church dedicated to her. And this is a day much awaited by our people who see the roots of our community and his religiosity in devotion to the saint. Its construction is dated around 1100. The times of the restoration have somewhat elongated due to the discovery of some paintings that are being perfected by the Department of Cultural Heritage of the Province of Trento. However, to rejoice the party we will have among us on 22 July the presence of our archbishop who with his word and the blessing of him will help us to draw the benefits of our devotion to the patron saint.

He had zolato with great dedication the restoration of the church. A cordial thanks must be addressed to all people who contributed to the precious work and to those who promoted the beautiful party.
